STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART

I have worked with Homeless people since 2003 with a four- year break. One of the trends that we have seen which is troubling is the growth in the number of older people in the Homeless population. We have seen a significant increase in the number of people in their late fifties, sixties, and seventies. That is particularly troubling because the older we get the harder it is to rebound from financial reversals.
 
It has been cold outside lately. When you are not sheltered, it is hard because you never seem to be able to get warm. Sometimes you are willing to do whatever is necessary to find shelter.
 
Recently, a sixty-year-old man called one morning from McPherson. We talked and then ` ran a background check on him. We approved him to come in that afternoon and he did. It was only later that I found out that he walked the 28 miles to Newton!!!! He is now looking for work.
 
As I think of each of you, I am Thankful. You have enriched my life and you have made a difference in the lives of so many people here at the Shelter. Thanks for your support. Three new people just started jobs this week. You made that possible. Happy Thanksgiving.

FURNITURE GIVEAWAY

If you have a need in this area, we want to bless you.

On Saturday Nov. 25 from 8-11:30AM we will be giving away stuffed chairs, chairs, mattresses, bed frames and couches. Bring your own truck and your muscle to carry it away. No furniture donations will be accepted that day. Sherry is in charge.
 

It is so exciting! The inside of the building is being finished. The sidewalks and parking lot are being poured.

A small church contacted us recently. They wanted to have a part in this project. They agreed to raise $500 to purchase a mattress and the shower curtains for the new building. If you would like to take on a small project, there are still some things we need. Please give Brian a call at 316-283-7711

SOME FOOD FOR THOUGHT

The reports are still coming out about how 62% of the people in American are living paycheck to paycheck. That is a very precarious position to be in.

In the last week I talked to a man who told me he had done some thinking about his lifestyle. He told me that he has decided to make some changes. He presently smokes, vapes, and drinks energy drinks. He said, “I know that none of these things are good for me.” He indicated that he spent $15 a day on those things. That is over $450 a month or $5,475 a year. Think about it, what could you do to save money for your Emergency Fund.

STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART 

At the New Hope Shelter, we are in the Hospitality Ministry. We offer hospitality to people that most people don’t want to offer hospitality to. I was reminded of this recently when a woman showed up on our doorstep, rang the bell and came in with her luggage. She had missed her train earlier in the morning. She was headed for Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Fortunately, she had a ticket for the next train which left the following day at 2:45AM from the Newton train station. This forty-one-year-old woman slept most of the day on our couch and was taken to the train by one of our wonderful volunteers.

As I was thinking about this encounter, I thought about the verse in I Peter 4:9. “Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.” There are three things this passage can teach us.

First, we should be willing to offer hospitality and to receive it. It is more refreshing that way.

Second, it is perfectly fine to set some reasonable limits. (You don’t have to allow someone to build a campfire in your Living Room.)

Third, we need to have the right attitude. We shouldn’t be involved in grumbling, murmuring, or complaining.

You can help us as we extend hospitality. We need continuing Financial support. A dollar a day ($30 a month) can help us immensely. Remember to bring us Food, supplies like paper goods, and personal care items. Pray for us often.

WORKERS AVAILABLE

Leaves are falling and need to be raked up. The basement or garage clean-up needs to be completed before Winter blows in. We have workers who can help you. Please call Brian or Marilyn a call at 316-283-7711 and we will get you an appropriate worker to help.

Tremendous progress is being made. The roof is on. The windows are in and brick is being put on the outside of the building. Sheetrocking is going on inside the building along with the installation of heat, air, plumbing and electrical systems. Drive by at 308 South Meridian Road Newton.

I WAS SHOCKED

The average consumer debt in America is $95,067!!!! What can you do? We sold our second car. We were able to save gas, upkeep, insurance and licensing costs. We switched internet providers and saved $180 a year. We get our television service for free through ROKU. We save $600 to $1,000 a year. What can you do to attack your debt? Do something.

Thanks to each one of you who have brought us Food from Gatherings and Events. You have helped to provide Lunch for our residents and staff.

Thanks also to all of you who bring us milk. We use that along with cereal for Breakfast. Your help in this area makes it possible for us to spend $75 per year for Food.

Thanks to our Church Teams who provide our Evening Meal every night. They are amazing and their Food is so delicious.

STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART

Within the last couple of weeks, we have had several people who were homeless and were traveling through this area. One disabled pregnant lady was stranded in Newton and needed to get back to Western Iowa.

We appealed on Facebook for $150 to send her home and the response was very encouraging. Within seven minutes of the post a warm-hearted woman responded. A number of other people responded who were willing to help with money or prayer. She made it back to her home in Iowa safely.

Sometimes people are faced with other problems that seem impossible. The story is told in Matthew 14:14-21 about the problem the disciples were faced with as they looked at the hungry crowd and it was dinner time. Like many of us the disciples saw no solution. They were going to tell everyone to go home and the teaching time was going to be over for the day.

Jesus, on the other hand saw the young boy with the loaves and fishes. He then prayed and a miracle took place—as the people were fed. I firmly believe that lives were changed that night because the little boy was willing to give his all and because Jesus did what he did.

Are you willing to send that check for $25? Are you willing to buy a couple of half gallons of milk or a couple of packages of lunch meat? With your support we can help people tackle the problems they can’t solve. Together with God’s help we can make a difference.

Volunteers

We are always looking for volunteers. If you would like to serve during the day we are looking for helpers during the day. If you would like to volunteer for evening service and join one of our church teams we would welcome you. Please give Marilyn, our Volunteer Coordinator a call at 316-283-7711.

Some Exciting Opportunities

  • Maybe you haven’t had an opportunity to participate in the new Shelter project yet—and you want to. Here are three ways you can be a part of things.

  • We are so excited because we have been given a solar array for the new Shelter. It is going to save us thousands of dollars in energy bills. Before that happens, we need to purchase gravel to keep our weeds down and to serve as a base for the solar array. We need $3,500. Designate GRAVEL in your giving.

  • We have identified high quality mattresses that are made in the USA that we need to buy for the new Shelter. They are $400 each and we need 36. Designate MATTRESS in your giving.

  • We need shower curtains for the new facility. They are $25 each and we need 16. Designate SHOWER CURTAINS in your giving.

  • Honor a loved one or co-worker, remember a birthday, celebrate the life of someone who has passed away with a gift to the New Hope Shelter. Remember that your donation is an investment in changing lives.

  • If you have extra frozen hamburger, roasts, hotdogs, pork, or chicken we can use it for meals or food baskets. We also accept garden produce and leftovers from family, church, or business events. Give Brian a call at 316-283-7711.

Tabor Mennonite Vacation Bible School participants purchased our wastepaper baskets with their offerings from this year. A big thanks to them for their efforts.

Grace Community Church through the Local Reach group has agreed to furnish the pillows, pillow enclosures, and pillowcases for the new Shelter. Thanks so much for helping.

Window frames are being installed. The roof is being installed right now by the good folks from Wray Roofing. The walls are taking shape. Despite the hot weather, the project is moving forward on schedule. Drive by 308 South Meridian Road Newton and take a look at the progress that has been made.

 You have helped us to be prepared to help and serve homeless people from all kinds of different situations. One evening recently, we were surprised to have a nineteen-year- old man ride more than seven miles on his bike to get to the Shelter. He had completed his freshman year in college. He had no place to stay and a job starting imminently.

On June 10, he flew to Vermont where he has taken a position in a camp for the balance of the summer. He will then return to school to start his sophomore year in college. We wish him the very best.

Other people who have stayed in the Shelter recently have come in from their tents, or their cars where they have stayed a few days or a few months.

In every case we try to respond with encouragement, and direction and try to care for their needswhatever they may be. Your regular support financially, or with food, or supplies helps us to navigate the varied and difficult situations we are presented with every day. Thanks.

The Power of the Memorial or Honorarium Gift

Recently we received Memorial Gifts for Calvin J. Frye, who passed away on April 26 and Arlene Decker who passed away on May 7. As you know flowers are pretty. They last for a few days, wilt and are thrown away. A memorial or gift in honor of an anniversary or birthday can have a lasting impact in the lives of people. Think about making such a gift. Speaking Engagements

Recently Brian has spoken at a number of churches and organizations. If you like him to come and speak about the work of the New Hope Shelter, please give us a call at the Office. We will be happy to book a date at your organization, church or service club.

Myth Buster

People often express their belief that all of the people who stay at the New Hope Shelter are from somewhere else like Wichita or from out of state. That is far from the truth. Recently a Mom came to us from Butler County after living in her car with her family. Recently a Newton woman called asking for a place to stay after having spent the night on a park bench in the City. Thanks for your continued support which enables us to give help to these folks in their time of need. Twenty-five dollars a month can change the life of a homeless person who has lost all hope.

The weather was threatening most of Friday, June 9, but we held our Beam and Wall signing. The new Shelter is progressing well. Our Conference Room/Storm Shelter is up and will be getting a reinforced roof soon. Steel beams are being erected on the cement slab which has been fully poured. We are so happy with the progress is being made. We are on schedule to occupy the new building by the end of the year and we are Thankful to Hutton Construction for their excellent work on the project so far.

In early May I got a phone call. There was an excited voice on the other end of the line. “This is “K” do you remember me?” Of course, I did. He went on to say “You guys saved my life after I got out of prison. You gave me a place to live.” “K” moved out after getting a good job. He worked for several months in the area and then came in one day to announce that he was moving to North Carolina.


In our most recent conversation, he confirmed that he has bought a house in North Carolina and that he is still working for Amazon. Your support made that possible, so thank you.

Did you know that costs $62 a day or $22,630 a year to keep a prisoner in the County jail and $30,000 a year to keep them in prison. When we get them working again like “K” did they cost the taxpayers nothing. In fact, they start paying taxes again, child support, fines, and debts. What wonderful returns your investment in the New Hope Shelter have brought in changed lives.

We have met the Mabee Foundation challenge. With your help and sacrifice we have raised the $5.45 million to build, equip, and furnish the new Shelter.

If you have food left over from Family gatherings, Church events, or Business meetings: please bring it to us. Half a ham, an extra casserole, half a watermelon, hotdogs and hamburgers and buns are examples of things we use regularly. Our Food budget is $75 annually and we need your help.

Lessons from the Homeless: How to Get a Job

Over ten years ago I was working as the Executive Director of the Crisis Center in Carthage MO. There was a guy there who wanted a job at a local manufacturing plant. It was a good job with full benefits. When he put in his application with the HR Director, she told him kindly that they were not hiring.

Their policy was to have job seekers sign their log when they came in. The next morning, he showed up at 7:30 a.m. and greeted the HR Director as she showed up at 8:00 a.m. He signed his name with a pink pen. He proceeded to do that for the next thirty days when they were working. On the thirtieth day he was hired. His persistence paid off. Lesson: Do not give up. Do not listen to the negative voices.

STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART


This is a season to reflect on the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. There would be a lot of things that would be different in this world if Jesus had not come into our world. The New Hope Shelter is starting its nineteenth year of existence this month serving Homeless Men, women and families. Christian institutions like ours would not exist if Jesus had not come.

I am celebrating the start of my fourth year as Executive Director in June. I would not be here in Newton KS serving in that capacity if Jesus had not come. What a profound difference he has made in my life, and I am so thankful.

I am reminded every day that we serve a population that has experienced brokenness and hard times. I am happy to say that with your help we have been able to show them care and compassion—and our volunteers have shown them that same thing—in the name of Jesus. We are able to serve Homeless and hungry people every day because of your support. We do not receive any tax dollars, so it is your support that makes this work possible.

After two years of service Shonda Suddeth has resigned as Shelter Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator and is moving to Dallas Texas. We appreciate her service. As we look for a suitable replacement, the position will be filled by Marilyn Bisbee.

A BIG THANKS TO...


All of you who braved the elements on March 24th to come out to the Groundbreaking at 308 Meridian Road. We had a good crowd and a great time of sharing. We prayed that the weather would hold, and not rain. For the most part we had our prayers answered. There were only a few sprinkles.

The Students of the Nursing program at Hesston College who brought us four vehicles full of Food, clothing, and supplies on April 12th. We appreciate the efforts you made and your continuing support.

The students of Burrton High School who did a Penny fundraiser for the Shelter. Thanks for all your efforts. You really showed that you cared.
 

Sometimes the Stay is Short


We offered housing at the Shelter to a young woman who was headed for a long-term program in a nearby town. She only stayed for three nights but was able to transition to her new program. With your support we were able to extend that opportunity to her—perhaps impacting the rest of her life.

Knee high fencing is now stretched around the perimeter of the new Shelter site. Stakes are driven in the ground. Loads of dirt and gravel are being dropped off at the site and earth moving equipment is smoothing the site. You know things are starting to get serious when a porta-potty appears on the site.

Thanks to all of you who have supported this effort. By the end of the year, we will have a new permanent home at 308 South Meridian Road. We have only around $44,750 to raise to secure the $1,000,000 Mabee Foundation challenge grant that will complete our fundraising for the building, furnishings, and equipment.

As you may know our meals at night are provided by Teams from various churches. Inflation has jacked up food prices as we all realize. We appreciate all of you who share frozen meat with us. Turn Things Around

Recent studies out this week say that 70% of the families in America are facing financial stress and that 58% are living paycheck to paycheck. It is possible to turn things around in your own situation by taking some concrete steps.

  • Ask the Lord to guide you in your spending and saving.

  • Bring coffee to work from home rather than stopping at the convenience store.

  • Bring your lunch from home instead of eating out.

  • Stop accumulating credit card debt and start paying more than the minimum payments on your credit cards.

STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART


I was able to identify more fully with some of the people who come to the Shelter as the result of a recent experience. I took a recent vacation to Tennessee—by plane from Wichita. After delays, we got on a Southwest Airlines flight to St. Louis.
 
I disembarked and walked with my wife in the direction of the new gate. We were separated for a few moments, and I instinctively reached for my wallet. It was not in my pocket. I searched all my other pockets, and it was nowhere to be found.
 
The plane we had come in on was leaving immediately for Baltimore. They were closing the doors. I asked an airplane employee to look for my wallet. It was not found on the plane. Long story, short my wallet was found by Wichita airport police officers and was returned to me ten days later.
 
My problem was a short-term inconvenience. However, a lot of people who come into the New Hope Shelter are dealing with more difficult issues that need to be addressed. Thanks for providing the support that makes it possible for us as a community to assist people in returning to housing and productivity.

Why Did you have a Refrigerator on your Front Porch?

People call us almost every day with something they want to share with us. In this case it was a refrigerator. We will need some new ones when we occupy our new building at the end of this year. However, we did not need one now. Someone blessed us with one so that we were able to share one with a family whose refrigerator was failing. That is the way it is supposed to work in God’s economy.

We guarantee that you will get bang for your bucks.

We need to raise $90,000 to secure the Mabee Foundation Challenge grant of $1,000,000. This gets our new Shelter completely paid for. Now is the time to send a check, bring in a check, or to go to our website, newhope-shelter.org, to make a credit card contribution. Thanks in advance for your support. STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART


February is the month of Love. The greatest expression of Love I can think of is that which is spoken about in John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son…” That is the basis for Christian faith-based charitable organizations all around the world including New Hope Shelter. That verse is also part of the motivation for many of the people who support us with their time, treasure, and in-kind contributions.

Recently I was standing on my front porch. I heard someone calling my first name. I looked to my neighbor’s house to the West. There was no one visible. I looked across the street and there was no one there. I finally looked to my right and there was my neighbor trying to get my attention. I went over to her porch, and she handed me a market bag full of hats, scarves and items she had knit, along with some other items she wanted to donate. Within twenty-four hours those items were being worn by residents who were trying to stay warm. A lot of thought and time went into my neighbor’s gift that night. It was a direct expression of her love.

Every day we see those expressions of love. It could be something handmade like my neighbor gave or it could be something manufactured like a package of toilet paper or napkins. These gifts are not something we take for granted. They are part of the lifeblood of the New Hope Shelter. Many times I have had donors tell me, “I am sorry, this is all I could share with you.” I almost always respond by saying, “What you have brought is fine.”  In God’s economy one person’s gifts/donations combined with those of others makes it so there is enough.

So, at New Hope Shelter this is the month of Love. So is every other month because we experience the Love of God through his people every month. For that I want to say “Thank you.”

When you go to Wichita next time…

Don’t give money to the panhandlers at a Quik Trips. I have responded to over 150 panhandlers in various locations across the United States. Often they are holding signs making their appeal. No matter what the signs say, most of them are untrue. I have repeatedly offered help in terms of food or shelter. Of the 150 I have encountered, only five have accepted help. The other 145 asked for money, which in most cases is spent on drugs, alcohol or cigarettes. Instead, consider a contribution to the New Hope Shelter.

 

Let’s Talk about Work

Every month we get people back into the work force. We have people available to help you for a day or two with yard work or in cleaning out your attic. We also have a man looking for full-time work as a forklift driver. Give Brian a call at 316-283-7711. Maybe we can help.

Here is How it Works

A nice lady picked up a ham from our freezer. She cooked it and brought it back to us for our lunches. Other ladies in recent weeks have picked up chicken, hams and turkeys to prepare for our dinner meals that their teams have served.

 

If you have meat to donate, we will welcome it. We will use it for our meals. If you have questions, give Brian  or Shonda a call at 316-283-7711. Thanks.

 

You Have Helped

Every month we have residents moving out successfully with furniture and household goods which you have assisted them with. Thank you.

We have a couple of residents who need washing machines. If you have one in working condition that you   would be willing to share, please bring it to our Front porch.

 

Our mission at New Hope Shelter, Inc. is to provide a sanctuary for those experiencing homelessness in Harvey, Marion, McPherson and Butler counties by uniting the local church into a nurturing community which restores hope through a growing relationship with Christ.
